Few people who supporting possible treason charges are working to use #PapuanLivesMatter issue for mobilizing dozens people to help their release. Their actions were taken on 15 June 2020 in Jakarta (Komite Pembebasan Tahanan Politik / Papua Political Prisoners Liberation Committee or Tapol). Similar rallies by dozens also took place in other cities including Malang (Aliansi Mahasiswa Papua/Papuan Student Alliance or AMP and Indonesian People’s Front for West Papua/Front Rakyat Indonesia untuk Papua), Yogyakarta (Aliansi Solidaritas Rakyat Untuk Demokrasi/People’s Solidarity Alliance for Democracy), Bogor , Bandung (Komite Anti RasismeAnti-Racism Committee or Koar) , and Balikpapan (Gerakan Pemuda dan Mahasiswa Anti Rasisme/Youth and Student Movement for Anti-Racism or Gempar).
Some of seven defendants in the trial in Balikpapan is Buchtar Tabuni, an executive of pro-Papuan independence group United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) with the threat of 17 years in prison, but on 17 June 2020 sentenced to 11 months in jail. Then Cenderawasih University student union head (BEM) Ferry Gombo also with the threat of 10 years in prison and USTJ students Irwanus Uropmabin, each with the threat of 5 years in prison, both are sentenced to 10 months in prison.
Buchtar and others have been proven to have violated Article 106 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code.
